BBC to launch FreeSat & Digital UK announces switchover dates to digital TV in South West
Fri 02 May 2008

The good news is that the BBC is launching their own satellite system (FreeSat) on Tuesday, 6th May, 2008.   No more details are available at this time.   Watch this space.

At a conference hosted by Digital UK in Dorchester on 18th April, 2008, it was announced that the two main transmitters serving the west of Dorset will switch over on:

Stockland Hill (Honiton) - 6th May, 2009

Beacon Hill (Torquay) - 8th April, 2009

However, the Stockland Hill transmitter will not increase its power output to full power until 2012 or 2013 as it would otherwise conflict with the signals from the Rowridge Transmitter on the Isle of Wight.    We have to wait until Rowridge has switched over in 2012 or so before Stockland Hill can up its power.   We were also told that 82% of the population in the south west is already on digital.

Let's hope that their predictions that digital is more efficient and will reach the other parts.... turns out to be true.   However, not everyone will be able to receive digital - approximately 2% will have to rely on satellite and so they may be interested in the new BBC FreeSat or Sky.
